Long-lasting pleasure in your parquet floor

To feel good in your own four walls is a basic human need. These days, parquet is a very popular floor covering. It’s a pleasure for your eyes to “wander” over the unique, naturally grown structure of the wood. When walking barefoot, it feels pleasantly warm and soft. But how can the wood be installed and its surface treated without installation materials that contain harmful substances? And how can the parquet stay beautiful for a long time?

1. Use the right installation method

If the parquet elements are bonded to the subfloor, the heat of the underfloor heating can reach the surface without being impeded. Walking noise has no chance. Numerous patterns, intarsia (inlay work using different species of wood) and friezes (decorative border elements of a parquet floor) as well as material combinations can be employed. The parquet can even be installed through several rooms without profile rails. Sanding and resealing the parquet is easy and produces even surfaces. It is therefore worthwhile to prefer bonded over floating installation.

2. Choose a suitable surface treatment

Which surface treatment offers long-lasting protection and at the same time healthy living? Parquet varnishes are a good choice if the floor is subject to heavy-duty use. They are available with different gloss levels to suit all tastes. Water-based varnishes are particularly popular: they contain hardly any solvents. The small quantity of solvent serves as an auxiliary which, just like the water, evaporates after application without any residue. Afterwards, only the desired mirror-like film remains. The surface can be easily vacuumed and wiped with a damp cloth. Renovation is only necessary every 10 to 15 years, depending on the quality of care and sealing. The service life of parquet floors can span several generations. It depends on the thickness of the wear layer, which can be sanded down several times.
