Playing on safe ground

In their own four walls, residents just want to feel comfortable and at ease. When families are expecting a baby or are already raising children, a healthy home is even more important. For their children, parents want to create a nest that is as safe as possible. Apart from child-safe furniture and toys, healthy building materials are essential. We have put together some tips which you may find useful.

1. Choose the right kind of flooring

Floors play a key role for a healthy indoor climate – not only in terms of surface area. They are in constant contact with the residents’ feet or bodies. Especially children spend a lot of time on the floor – even when they are already past the crawling stage. For the simple reason that it offers the largest space for them to spread out their toys. You should therefore make sure that the floor covering complies with the current test standards – recognizable by the CE mark as well as by the TÜV and GuT seal for carpets.

2. Go for bonded installation

Full-surface bonding of the floor covering offers a lot of advantages. This also applies to children’s rooms. When choosing loose lay or floating installation, the floor coverings will always be in motion. This leads to faster wear and causes disturbing room noise. If, however, the flooring is firmly bonded to the subfloor, it will retain its beauty for many years and also reduce the noise level. When combined with underfloor heating, no separating air space will slow down the transfer of heat. The result: Pleasant warmth for little feet and the right solution for cost- and environmentally-conscious parents. Of key importance is the choice of a certified low-emission adhesive.

3. Use building products with a quality seal

Just one look is enough to see whether a building or installation product is ecologically safe. With the EMICODE® seal on the packaging, parents can be sure that the contents are safe. The seal is granted to flooring but also wall and window installation products that comply with the world’s strictest emission limits. The test method is reviewed and adjusted as necessary to reflect the state of the art at any time. Independent laboratories determine the content of VOC emissions. If the products meet the world’s lowest limit values, they are awarded the EMICODE®. Regular spot checks by neutral experts and testing institutes ensure that the products always comply with the test criteria– a huge advantage of EMICODE® over other health and environmental certifications.
